We spotted David of South Portland shopping for fresh produce at Cape Elizabeth's Jordan's Farm on Wells Rd.
He arrived by ebike, a 5-mile ride from his home near Broadway Gardens. He says he bought his first ebike in 2019 and loves biking around the Portland area, including up to the annual Yarmouth Clam Festival.
Unfortunately, Wells Rd. does not feel safe for many people on foot or on a bike. The car lanes are quite wide, which can make drivers unconsciously drive faster than the speed limit, which is already higher than the 20-25 mph that more and more municipalities around the world are adopting in residential areas.
There is no bike lane and there are no sidewalks on Wells Rd., despite that road connecting the Leighton Farms and Cross Hill neighborhoods to the sidewalks along Scott Dyer Rd.
Making Wells Rd. safe for walkers and bikers could enable more kids to get to school in a physically active way.
